How to Reset the Oil Life on a 2019 Buick Encore

If you recently changed the oil in your 2019 Buick Encore, the Oil Life Monitoring System may still display an “Oil Change Due” message. The system must be manually reset after every oil change so it can accurately track when your next service is due.

2019 Buick Encore Oil-Life Reset Instructions

Follow these simple steps:

Turn the ignition to the ON/RUN position without starting the engine.
Press the MENU button on the turn-signal lever until the Vehicle Information Menu appears.
Rotate the thumbwheel on the lever until Remaining Oil Life is displayed.
Press and hold the SET/CLR button located on the end of the turn-signal lever.
When the system asks if you want to reset it, select YES.
The display should now show 100% Oil Life.
Turn the ignition off and restart the vehicle to confirm that the oil-change message is gone.

If the oil-life percentage does not reset, repeat the procedure and make sure the vehicle is not running while performing the reset.

What Does the Buick Oil-Life Monitor Do?

The Oil Life Monitoring System does more than count mileage. It uses information such as engine temperature, operating conditions, driving habits, and the number of engine revolutions to estimate the condition of the engine oil.

Short trips, extended idling, heavy traffic, extreme temperatures, and severe driving conditions may cause the oil-change reminder to appear sooner.

Resetting the monitor does not change the engine oil. The system should only be reset after the oil and filter have been replaced.

Oil-Change Tips for the 2019 Buick Encore

The 2019 Buick Encore is commonly equipped with a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine. Turbocharged engines depend on clean oil for lubrication and temperature control. Delaying oil changes can contribute to sludge, accelerated engine wear, and turbocharger problems.

Use the oil viscosity and specification listed in your owner’s manual or on the oil-fill cap.
Install a good-quality oil filter.
Check the engine-oil level regularly.

The reset steps were not completed correctly.
The ignition was not in the proper position.
The wrong Driver Information Center menu was selected.
The SET/CLR button was released too quickly.
There is another maintenance message or dashboard warning present.

An oil-pressure warning light is different from an oil-life reminder. If the red oil-pressure warning remains illuminated while the engine is running, shut the engine off and have the vehicle inspected immediately. Low oil pressure can cause serious engine damage.
