2009 Toyota Scion xB – Oil Change, Rear Brakes and Rotors
Our first vehicle was a 2009 Toyota Scion xB that came in for an oil change and rear brake service. The vehicle also had an ABS warning light illuminated, so our technicians inspected the rear braking system while diagnosing the customer’s concern. During the inspection, we discovered that the rear brake pads were down to approximately 10% remaining, meaning they were getting very close to the end of their useful life. We also inspected the rear brake rotors and found excessive rust and deterioration. Normally, depending on the condition and specifications of the rotors, machining or cutting the rotors may be an option. In this case, however, the rotors had excessive rust, so replacing them was the better repair rather than trying to machine a rotor that was already in poor condition. We replaced the rear brake pads and rotors and performed the necessary brake inspection to make sure the system was operating properly. The vehicle also received its scheduled oil change as part of the service. Brake inspections are extremely important because worn brake pads can eventually damage rotors and increase stopping distances. Our second bay was occupied by something a little different—one of Jack’s Auto Service’s own tow trucks. Our tow truck needed an alternator replacement, which is an important repair for any vehicle but especially important for a tow truck that needs to be dependable and ready to respond when a customer needs roadside assistance or towing service. The alternator is responsible for charging the battery while the engine is running and supplying electrical power to the vehicle’s electrical systems. When an alternator begins to fail, the battery may eventually become discharged, warning lights can illuminate, electrical components can begin acting strangely, and eventually the vehicle may not start. Because our tow trucks are an important part of the services we provide to our customers, keeping them properly maintained is a priority. This repair is also a good reminder that charging system problems should be diagnosed rather than automatically assuming the battery is bad. 2015 Chevy Silverado 5.3L – A/C Condenser Leak
Our third bay had a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado with the 5.3L engine that came in with an air conditioning problem. During our inspection, we found evidence of an A/C condenser leak toward the front, near the upper driver’s side. Interestingly, this is the second time we’ve seen this particular type of leak in this area on one of these trucks. A refrigerant leak can cause the air conditioning system to gradually lose cooling performance until the A/C is no longer producing cold air. Proper diagnosis is important because simply adding refrigerant isn’t a permanent repair if the system has a leak. When an A/C system is leaking, the source of the leak needs to be identified before replacing components and recharging the system. Depending on the condition of the condenser and the exact location of the leak, the appropriate repair may involve replacing the condenser and related seals before evacuating and recharging the system to the correct specification. A/C problems are especially noticeable during the hot summer months, which makes proper diagnosis and repair important for both comfort and reliability. 2013 Chevy Silverado – Oil Change, Air Filter and P0463 Fuel Gauge Problem
The fourth vehicle was another Chevrolet Silverado, this time a 2013 Chevy Silverado, which came in for an oil change and air filter service. However, the customer also had a Check Engine Light and a fuel gauge that wasn’t working correctly. Our diagnostic scan revealed P0463 – Fuel Level Sensor Circuit High. This is an excellent example of why a Check Engine Light should be properly diagnosed rather than simply clearing the code. A P0463 code can involve the fuel level sensor circuit, wiring, connectors, grounds, or the fuel sending unit inside the tank. On this particular truck, there is also significant rust, which means we have to carefully consider the possibility of a poor ground or corrosion affecting the electrical connection. The problem could potentially be related to a ground, wiring or connector where the harness connects to the fuel pump module, the fuel level sending unit inside the tank, or even another component such as the instrument cluster. A proper diagnosis requires testing the circuit rather than simply replacing the fuel pump and hoping the problem goes away. This is exactly where experienced automotive diagnostics can save a customer money. 2003 Ford F-350 – Transmission, Driveline and Differential Service
The fifth bay contained a 2003 Ford F-350 that came in with a driveline vibration. After inspection, we identified worn driveshaft U-joints and a bad carrier bearing, both of which can create vibration and excessive movement in the driveshaft, particularly at certain speeds. The truck was also scheduled for a transmission service and rear differential fluid service. We replaced the worn U-joints and carrier bearing, serviced the transmission, and drained and replenished the rear differential with the proper lubricant. Because this is a heavy-duty Ford F-350, maintaining the drivetrain is particularly important if the truck is used for towing, hauling, or heavy work. The driveline components operate under significant loads, and worn U-joints or carrier bearings can eventually lead to much more serious problems if ignored. We also performed a tire rotation, moving the tires from front to rear as appropriate, and rebalanced the front tires. Tire condition and balance can contribute to vibrations, so addressing the driveline problem while also checking the tires gives us a much better opportunity to make sure the truck leaves the shop driving smoothly. This is a good example of the importance of looking at the entire vehicle when diagnosing a vibration instead of assuming every vibration is caused by a tire.
